Final Fantasy VIII
My rating: 9.4 This game was absolutely great. Wonderful. Magnificent. The only
reason that it didn't get a score like FFVII is because there's was just a little something
that I liked better about FFVII, and I grade on a curve. The things that didn't quite make
me too happy were the following: There was not nearly enough music in the game. In FFVII,
there is different music for every character that plays a slightly significant part in the
story. Nearly every area of FFVII had it's own music, but in FFVIII, there is probably a
total of ten songs. It gets very repetitive and there's just something special about hearing
a song and immediately thinking of a certain person or area and remembering how fun it was,
and FFVII offers this, while FFVIII doesn't. Another thing that I didn't quite like is the
lack of a place similar to Gold Saucer in FFVII. I know that I've complained about other
games blatantly copying the idea from FFVII (Star Ocean and Legend of Legaia, to name a few),
but this was one game that I expected it from. Away from the disappointments, one of the
most involved and biggest improvements in FFVIII is the card game. So much thought was put
into it, and it's one of those games that you can start playing right away, but it takes a
while to master. Some say that it was good enough to be it's own game, but I think that
that's kinda stretching it a bit. In summary, the ending FMV is breathtaking. The story
is very deep and the love between Squall and Rinoa makes it so much better. This is
definitely a must-have for any RPG lover, but I'm sure everyone already knew that. If you
haven't played either FFVII or FFVIII though, I would recommend FFVII above FFVIII hands down.
