Another day, close to the end of the school year,
Darren went to Erica's house again. This time,
his excuse was to work on diarios for Spanish
class. They sat on her bed and worked, casually
flirting the entire time. At one point, Erica
stole Darren's diarios and started writing parts
of it.

By the end of the school year, Darren and Erica
were spending much time together. They enjoyed
laying on Darren's sister's hammock together, as
well as talking on Darren's roof. On May 28, 2001,
as they were lying on the hammock, Darren gathered
up all of his courage and leaned in for a kiss.
He was so taken aback that he couldn't breathe
properly.

Shortly afterward, Darren asked Erica, "Are you
my girlfriend?" She gave no response. A few
nights later, on June 1, 2001, Erica explained
to Darren, "You know how you asked me if I was
your girlfriend? Well you have to ask me to
be your girlfriend." "Oh," said Darren,
"Will you be my girlfriend?" And in the
playground that night, Erica said yes. Thus
began the Story of One Year.
